Treats
Treats are great for your pets as supplements to their diets, or as rewards for doing tricks or just because you love them and want to give them something fun to eat. There are many many kinds of things you can give your rat.  They can eat pretty much anything you eat.  Almost any vegetable or fruit is okay, depending on your pet's taste. Make sure you read the Unsafe Foods page to avoid certain vegetables and fruits that can cause harm. Carrots, celery, apples, strawberries, watermelon, and others are okay, and will tickle their taste buds and be a wonderful change from the norm.
When choosing to feed treats, make sure you give healthy treats most of the time, with sugary treats like cookies or candy, or fatty treats like seeds and nuts only given occasionally.  Junk food is just as bad for rats as it is for people, and can make your rat overweight as well as fill them up so they are not hungry for the food their bodies really need.
When looking for a treat for a reward in trust training or trick training, it's good to use something more liquidy that the rat cannot grab and run away with.  This includes foods like yogurt, baby food, jell-O, and other soft type foods which can be eaten from a spoon or licked off your fingers.  Having to eat it right beside you makes it so the rat cannot snatch the food away, which is good for trust training as it keeps him next to you and is good for training tricks as well since he will be less distracted looking for a safe place to nibble.
